This is not an outrageously well-known series, but it is one of the best sport anime out there. It's main character is Ippo Makonuchi, who we see in the very first episode is bullied. It progresses into a story about him becoming an amazing boxer.
The story is repetitive, but is presented in a really good way, each match manages to seem like the greatest, even when the match is for a side character. However, this does not change the typical repetitiveness of the story, and that forces a focus on the characters who, lucky for us, are entertaining. This being an anime about boxing, there are new characters at least every two episodes, and then they disappear right after the match, but they never seem to be fake. Of course, the major characters are very good, they all have at the least a semblance of a backstory, and at most we get to meet their family. The thing I've danced around is the length of the anime, which is nothing compared to the manga (which has been showing up in Shounen Jump since 1989). The anime is roughly 100 episodes long, but it is worth every minute. I highly recommend you watch at least part of Ippo. -Vie

+If you've heard the chant, 'LOVE AND PEACE, LOVE AND PEACE'. This is the anime that caused it, with the main character's refusal of violence and happy-go-lucky attitude. Vash's attitude is especially strange in the space-westerner that this is. Of course he has a good reason to not be a fighter, but I won't even talk about that.
There is an almost romance in the show between Vash and Merrill, and I was sexually frustrated for them. I guess I can't really say more on this front either. This show is so damn good I don't want to spoil ANYTHING, you need to watch it for yourself. I hope you don't think that this is hopeless hype, because it is deserved for most people. You might have an eye-roll or two at some of Vash's actions (I certainly did), but it is a great show almost all of the time. -Vie |
